Overview

Extensibility is introducing XML Console part of the series for enabling technologies streamlining the development, management, and deployment of XML-based e-business solutions. XML Console is a comprehensive solution for the project management of a single or batch of XML document files -- schema files or XML business document files (i.e. instance documents).

XML Console enables the centralized batch conversion, validation, and documentation management of schemas and XML business documents  within a workgroup. It gives users a configurable command center for the organization and subsequent processing of XML document files.  Organizations can now process a single or groups of schemas in all major and emerging XML schema dialects including DTD, XDR, SOX v.2, BizTalk, and a subset of XML Schema (XSDL, Apr 7). XML Console provides companies exceptional control for the streamlined implementation of XML initiatives internally and with trading partners.

Total Solution

XML Console provides unparalleled control for a department to implement and manage schemas and XML-based infrastructure assets. The combination of XML Console with XML Authorityú, the premier solution for the creation, conversion, and management of schemas, allows full-featured support for schema development and management throughout a workgroup. In addition, XML Console and XML Authority coupled with XML Instance™  and XMLschema.com™ provide departments with unprecedented resources for the development and deployment of XML infrastructures required to empower today's e-business.

Project-level Management

XML Console provides a command center for the management and processing of schemas and XML business documents at the project level.  The project-level management facilities allow incoming XML document files from trading partners to be automatically filed, processed, and managed.  Using the customizable user interface, only XML document files will be identified - then appropriate ones can be selected for processing or editing.

Add Directory

To facilitate the project-level management of XML document files, the Add Directory feature enables users to add entire folders and subfolders of schemas and XML business documents to their projects, eliminating the need for the user to manually find and select each individual file. Once a directory is selected, only schemas and XML business documents will be displayed, simplifying XML document management.

Intuitive Graphical User Interface

To provide a comfortable and intuitive environment for project-level management, XML Console employs icons to make schema and XML business document information instantly accessible. The file name icons for each file correspond to the applications used to edit that file. Schema files are identified by the XML Authority icon, while instance files are identified by the XML Instance icon. The icon in the Valid column for each file provides validity information for that file at a glance; a white star means that the file is valid, a red star means that it is invalid, and a question mark means that the file has not yet been validated.

Integration of XML Authority and XML Instance

The integration of XML Console with XML Authority and XML Instance provides a comprehensive solution for companies implementing XML initiatives. Schemas in an XML Console project are listed with the icon of XML Authority, and XML business documents  are listed with the XML Instance icon, as a marker to signify which application should be used to edit each file. XML Console provides the project-level management solution, XML Authority provides schema development and editing capabilities on an individual basis, and XML Instance provides instance document development and editing capabilities. This total solution provides full-featured support and tremendous resources for design, deployment, and management of schemas and business documents at the project level.

Validation and Conversion

XML Console allows inbound or outbound XML document file or batches of files to be easily processed from a central location. XML Console assures that all schemas in use are valid and error-free, enabling the smooth flow of XML information throughout a workgroup and its trading partners.

Validation

Using the validation feature of XML Console a single or batch of XML document files can be quickly validated using the technology from XML Authority.  The iconic representation provides a quick visual cue for valid versus invalid files.  For detailed reporting, a Project Report can be generated in a separate window. The Project Report pane identifies valid and invalid files and provides management options. For invalid files, the Error pane identifies error description(s) and line number(s) on a per-file basis for the immediate isolation of errors and quick resolution of the issue.

With the click of a button from the Project Report pane, users can print the report, or save it to be viewed in their preferred web browser.

Schemas or XML business documents identified with an error in XML Console can quickly be edited in XML Authority or XML Instance, respectively. The integration of editing capabilities provides a comprehensive solution for companies implementing XML initiatives. See Turbo XML for details.

XML Console provides a user-configurable Refresh option which validates every file in the project at the interval of the user's choice. This ensures that files remain valid after they have been edited.

Conversion

XML Console also enables workgroups to convert schemas across different dialects while preserving the integrity of the originals. From a central location, single or multiple schemas or DTDs can be converted into any prominent schema dialect.  XML Console supports all major and emerging schema dialects including DTD, XDR, SOX v.2, BizTalk, and a subset of XML Schema (XSDL, Apr 7).  The project-level conversion of schemas facilitates the rapid deployment of schemas, in the appropriate schema dialect, internally or externally.

XML Console allows project managers to keep the converted schemas in the directories of the originals, or place them all in a separate specified directory. It also provides the option to add the converted files to the current project or a new project to facilitate schema management.

Note: XML Console actually converts copies of the selected schemas; the original schemas themselves remain unchanged. This feature is especially useful when a trading partner is using a different schema dialect.

SchemaDOC

XML Console supports a powerful documentation feature called SchemaDOC. A company can use SchemaDOC to generate a detailed summary of one or more schemas as well as a visual inventory of their components. The browser-based summary of a schema includes key information for standardized documentation and communication within a department.
